Leadership transitions are inevitable. They're also nerve wracking. An effective communications strategy not only can put fears at ease, it also helps maintain engagement. DePaul University recently experienced its own leadership transition with the installation of its 12th president on July 1. Over the course of a year, DePaul’s Office of Public Relations and Communications implemented strategic tactics to foster understanding and transparency between leadership and employees – not an easy task to accomplish in the midst of a closed, confidential search.

DePaul leveraged its digital employee communication tools to keep the university informed and engaged from the very first day of the search all the way to the new president’s first days on campus. (Disclaimer: the strategy and tactics shared in this session are not guaranteed to prevent the sudden appearance of new gray hair.)

In this session, you’ll gain an understanding on how to successfully:

  • Create a leadership transition communications plan, tailored to meet the needs of your organization
  • Implement tactics to keep employees engaged during your organization’s next leadership transition
  • Navigate the multiple players involved in a leadership transition, including your organization’s board, search committee, outgoing and incoming leaders – and, when applicable, spouses too
  • Leverage your digital communication tools to boost affinity during times of uncertainty
